Design Process

The design process takes time and careful planning.  It is essential for creating a unique and inviting layout and style for your garden .  This process is fun, interesting, and usually consists of the following steps:

Initial Meeting:  I’ll meet with you to discuss your “wish  list”  (walkways, patio, retaining walls, perennial border, decorative fencing, etc.), and walk your site to assess the scope of your project.

        Design Proposal:
Next I’ll send you a proposal estimating how much
time will be required to create a  landscape plan that addresses your wishes.

Base Map Preparation: A base map will be prepared for your project
working with any information you may have such as a property survey
        and/or  architectural drawings.

Site Inventory: I’ll collect site information such as existing paving, utility
boxes, existing trees & shrubs, downspouts, etc., and take digital pictures
        of your site.

Conceptual Design: Guided by your design requests, a
conceptual landscape plan will be prepared showing proposed walkways,
seating areas, focal points, with a preliminary planting layout.

Presentation meeting:  We’ll meet to review the conceptual landscape
plan and discuss layout, material choices, and plant selection.

Preparation of final construction plans
(which you may use to obtain bids)

  •    Hardscape Plan - if your project includes paving
for walkways, patios, retaining walls, steps, etc.,
these  elements will be located & dimensioned

  •    Planting Plan - locates shade, ornamental trees,
           deciduous and evergreen
      shrubs, perennials,
ornamental grasses, vines, ground covers, spring
           & summer flowering bulbs

  •    Plant List - provides botanical and common plant
names, quantities, suggested sizes and spacing

  •    Specifications - detail material selections
           & installation

    •   Conceptual Lighting Plan - I can suggest locations for light
fixtures on the planting plan to up light specimen trees, illuminate
pathways, & softly wash garden focal points with light.

Bidding: Over the years I have worked with many area landscape
contractors and
can recommend extremely qualified companies
who I think would fit with your
project location, size and scope.

On-site consultation:
I can meet you and/or your landscape contractor
on site to
assist with construction decisions and plant placement.
